THEFT OF REGISTERED LETTERS. WELLING LON, Alarch 21. Two charges ot stealing registered letters, one containing I-,/io/- in £1 notes, and the other, a iMinev order for 7/6, were admitted i»\ a clerk, named Robert Patrick Crawford. aged 20 before Air I’age, b.AL. to-day. Accused was a cadet in the Immigration Department for two years ,before the commission of the offences. A remittance, expected by an immigrant, to whom money had been, advanced, 1 did not come to hand, and when inquiries were made, it was ascertained that accused had signed for a letter containing the money. The money order was also due, but did not arrive. Accused said he could not account for the disappearance of the money, but since his arrest he had made res titution of £4/11/10. He was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. INCORRECT BOWSER MEASURE. CHRISTCHURCH. March 21. The first prosecution here against a bowser owner, who gave short measure, was heard by Air Lawry, S.AI. James George Andrews, of Ferry Road, was fined £7 on a charge of having an incorrect measuring instrument, and £3 for selling petrol short of the quantity demanded. An officer of the Labour Department said that as the result of complaints, a test was made. Defendant was asked to supplv four gallons. It was found to be 2j pints short. MILK VENDOR CONVICTED. CHRISTCHURCH, March 21.
Robert William Samson was convicted to-dav on a charge of selling milk under standard, and ordered to pay costs. . Satnson is Chairman of the Milk Vendors’ Association. Councel for the defence -said it wa an unfortunate case as the man was a zealous worker for pure milk. It was his first offence. VAN DRIVER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Al ASTERTON. Alarch 21. Louis Stanley Tremayne, driver of the motor van concerned in the collision on February 18th with a motor lorrv. driven by Kenneth Aplin, which took place in Queen Street. Masterton, was charged to-day in the Masterton Magistrate’s Court, before Mr Free, S.M.. with having on February 18th negligentlv driven a motor van, thereby causing the death of Frank Clifford Shakleton. . f Shakleton was a passenger in Aplin s lorry, proceeding to work at the freezing works. He was thrown on to the road and died from injuries.
Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed’ to the Supreme Court at Wellington for trial. Bail was allowed.
