Misses K. Hooker and G. Magee, of Reef ton, have left for Christchurch. Mr and Mrs F. Al. Dennehy, who have been visiting Timaru, return by to-day’s express to Greymouth. Air D. J. Donald, railway stationmaster at Invercargill, is visiting the West Coast. Mr Scandrett, who has resigned from the police force, has taken up his residence at Westport. A Melbourne cable announces the death of Mr Joseph Sternberg, known as the father of the Legislative Council, aged 76. Phyllis Lee, daughter of Mr V. Lee, who was recently injured in a motor accident at Reefton, is now makinggood progress towards recovery. Mis Hubbard, of Reefton, is progres_ sing favourably, after undergoing an operation at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch. Air and Airs E. Dyson, of Tauranga, who have been spending a. holiday with Airs Patterson senr, of Reefton, have left on their return home. After a health visit to the Coast, Airs G. Taylor and Air 11. Taylor have returned to Auckland, having had an enjoyable stay at Reefton. A Sydney cable states that Sir Geo. Elliott, chairman of Directors of the Bank of New Zealand and Lady Elliott are passengers for New Zealand by the liner Niagara, which is on route to Auckland. > Passengers for New Zealand by the liner Aorangi, which left Vancouver on Thursday, include Air Howard Heinz, a leading Pittsburgh industrial capitalist, and Air Leslie Boyd, a Canadian Grand Commissioner. A Press wire states that the Gover-nor-General, Sir Chas. Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson arrived in Dunedin on Thursday, and were met by the Alayor and Mayoress. The visit is unofficial. They will leave for Southland this morning. King Amanullah of Afghanistan paid a visit to the Pope (says a cable from Rome), and the Pope presented him with an autographed portrait, and conferred the Order of the Golden Spur. The King, contrary to custom, did not kneel or kiss the Pope’s hand, but bow_ ed deeply.
