The Waikato River, forced out of its century-old course by a massive barrier at Arapuni, has now torn its way in a raging torrent through a channel sluiced for it on a plateau hundreds of feet above its old level. It has carved out deviations from its original course, and bitten into pumice /land, while the turbulent waters have flattened out between the Arapuni dam site and Hamilton, the drinking water of which place is now discoloured, as thousands of tons of debris have found their way as sediment into the town’s water svstem.
