AMERICAN TARIFF.

REVISION MOVE. Discussed by Senate. (Received January 10, at 8.55 p.m.) ASHIN GTON, January 10. The unexpected precipitation of a to secure a downward revision of the tariff, occurred in the Senate to-day, when Senator McMaster asked for action on his resolution putting the Senate on record as favouring tariff reducing during the present session. He intimated that relief lor farmers cannot otherwise be secured.

A discussion lasting several hours followed. Senator Walsh said that certain industries were entitled to increased rates. Senator Borah said he favoured increased duties on farm products. Various other senators indicated particular industries that should be favoured. It is not considered likely however, that the present session of Congress will take any action on the tariff. It is announced that United States exports for the first eleven months of 192 Y, show a total of 4,457 million dollars, and imports 3,852 millions, representing respectively an increase of 124 million dollars, and a decrease of 219 millions over the corresponding period of 1926. Australia and New Zealand together purchased 178,598,000 dollars worth of goods during the period under review and sold to tho United States for 50,460,000.
