HOKITIKA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, January 9. Miss Cecile Foley of Oamaru, is the guest of Miss Gillooly, she intends to visit the Glaciers before returning to her home. Mr. James Spence, formerly a store keeper at Rimu,, and one time member of' the Westland County Council, is at present here on a visit from the North Island.

The death took place at the Westland Hospital on Sunday morning of Mr. William Berdinner, an old and esteemed resident of Kumara. Deceased was a native of Cornwall, England and 86 years of age. He had been a resident in New Zealand for many years. He was well known as an athlete in his early days, especially for wrestling. He leaves one son Edward of Westport, and two daughters, Mrs. Morris of Wellington, and Mary of Auckland. The funeral takes place at Kumara cemetery on Tuesday afternoon at 6 o’clock. Miss Irene Buddrick, Cowell, South Australia, is visiting Hokitika. Many tourists continue to arrive, perfect weather allowing then to see the beauties of Westland, under ideal conditions.

The Scouts lately returned from their week of camping, after a very happy time; all voted it quite the best camp Yield. Neither accidents. nor sickness interfered, with the routine, and the weather' was /ideal. Tomorrow (Tuesday) the Hokitika Wolf Cubs, along with, service Scouts unable ~to attend the main camp, are going to attend the main camp, are stone Siding, where by the courtesy of Mr. Ogilvie they are being permitted to again use the site> and conveniences The pajty leave by the morning train and return at the weeX-endt, being in charge of Scoutmaster A. Sutherland. Numerous inquiries are being made by candidates who sat for the higher annual examination before Christmas as to when the results will bo available. The results of the matriculation examination arc not likely to be ready for issue until towards the end of this month, states the Wellington “Post”, and it is learned on inquiry from the Education Department that it is too early yet to state definitely when the Public Service Entrance examination results will be available for publication.

On Saturday the ATI Sainis’ Tennis Club journeyed to Kokatahi to try conclusions with the local team. The visitors were entertained with the usual lavish hospitality and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. The play was of a comparatively high standard, and, except for the marked superiority of the Kokatahi ladies, the games were keenly contested with a splendid sporting spirit. Kokatahi won by 14 to 11 and by 136 games to 124. The detailed scores (Kokatahi players’ being named first) arc as follows:—Ladies’ Singles.!—Mrs. Ecclesfield 6 beat Miss Stapleton 5; Miss Higgins 6 beat Miss L. Evans 2; Miss Monk 6 heat Miss M.
