RUGBY FOOTBALL.

Waratahs Defeat Wales.

A FAST AND FURIOUS CONTEST. LONDON, November 26. Warn tabs beat Wales by 18 points to 8. The game was furiously fought, and was fast and interesting throughout, but th? Waratahs were definitely superior in the back play. The remarkable improvement was due lo Wallace playing left wing instead of Bowers, and King displacing Towers as centre. The weak handling whereby they previously lost many points was conspicuously absent. The forwards retained fiery hardworking and were brilliantly notable. Though Wales got an equal share of the ball from the serums, the visiting backs wore sufficiently strong on defence to counter this. There were thirty-five thousand spectators. The conditions were good. Play started fast and exciting, the ball swinging from end to end. A fine dash by Jack Ford ended in Wallace scoring a brilliant try. Lawton converting. Lewis then started a forward rush for the home team, wherefrom Roberts scored an unconverted try. At half-time the score was Waratahs 5; Wales 3.

The tourists dashingly opened the second half with a series of rapid movements, wherefrom Sheehan scored, Lawton adding the extra points. Uncertain handling, which was Wales’ worst fault, spoiled a great opportunity. Roy Jones dropping the ball after crossing the line. Sheehan was the guiding spirit, and added two startling tries inside two minutes. He cross-kicked to Erie Ford, who gathered at top speed, King taking a perfect inside transfer, scoring between th*' posts. Lawton converted. Sheehan again kicked up the field, and Wallace sprinting got possession and scored in the corner. Lawson’s kick hit the cross-bar. Wales now had a full share of the ball, and pressed hard, Lewis scoring, and Rees converting just before the finish. The result justified accurately and showed th? difference in the teams. Wales sadly missed the Cambridgcite, RoweHarding, the three-quarters lacking pace and combination. The forwards held their own in the line-outs.
