FIRE BRIGADES.

DEMONSTRATION AT DENNISTON. The West Coast Fire Brigades’ anDenniston Domain on Saturday, in fine weather. The Greymouth team were unfortunate in losing the services of Fireman Blocksage in the wet events, as a result of an accident earlier in the contest, resulting in a small bone of his leg being broken. An accident also bcfcl Secretary Walton, who was knocked over by the reel in the slight concussion. This somewhat disorganised the team for the remainder of the contest. The various events, however, generally provided a good exhibition of fire brigade work. Otira won the Bussell Shield and the Benyon Cup. Westport won the Browning Cup and the Rose Cup, and three gold medals. Details are as follows:— One man event (Browning Memorial Cup):— Westport first. Hokitika second. Greymouth third. Two men coupling (Rose Cup):— Westport first. Greymouth second. Denniston third. Three men, wet, flat:— Otira first. Kumara second. Grey mouth third Five men coil, wot: — Otira first. Kumara second. Reefton third. Five men reel: — Hokitika first. Reefton second. Kumara third. On Sunday morning, when the visiting teams from the Coast arrived in Westport from the Denniston competitions, they were met at the Brigade Station, and morning tea and refreshments were provided by members of the local Brigade. Lieut N. White, of the Greymouth Brigade, proposed the tyiast of the Westport Fire Brigade, his remarks being endorsed by Fireman Fahey. Superintendent Curtis, of the Westport Brigade, suitably responded. The visiting teams then attended the morning services of the various

They arrived back for dinner at the City Hotel, ami at 2 p.m. the visitors departed. amidst cheers from a large gathering of the public, coloured streamers being much in evidence.
