A cabl from Rome innounces the death of the Papal S cretary, Cardinal Benzani. Dr McKay, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned to Greymouth by Saturday’s express. The death took place at Nelson Creek on Sunday of Mr. Michael Tobin, aged 87 years.. Dcccasec| leaves an adult family. ’ His wife predeceased him some years ago. A cable' from Rome states that the appointment is announced of Caruinai Bonaventure Cerretti. as Cardinal Legate at the World Eucharistic Congress to be held in Australia. Cardinal Cerretti has been Papal Nuncio in Paris, and was the Dope’s Representative of the Peace Conference. The 'death took place on Saturday of Mr. William Smith, .t>f 281 Armagh Street Christchurch. Deceased who was the father of Mrs. M. Smythe (Greymouth) resid'd for many years on the West Coast, following the occupation of a bookmaker for a long time at Brunnerton, and later at Greymouth. He leaves an adult family of eleven. A Press message from Wellington states that the Right Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery arirved in Wellington from Palmerston North on Saturday. He will be the guest of the Govern'or General and Lady Alice Ferguson in Wellington. He stated he was impressed with the very efficient organisation of the dairying industry in New Zealand, but it and other industries would requir ■ even better organisation. The funeral of the late Mr James Haldane, of Runanga. who was killed as a result of falling in a depression at Ten Mile on Thursday, took place to the Karoro Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of friends of the deceased from Runanga and outlying districts. The body was conveyed by train from Dunollie to the Karoro Station. The Runanga Band was in attendance, and played “The Red Flag” over the grave. This was ths only ceremony, but it was very im pressive.
