LATE JUSTICE ALPERS.

TRIBUTE FROM BENCH AND BAR. WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. The honour and esteem in which the late Judge Alpers was held, was expressed in tributes from the Bench and Bar at the Wellington Supreme Court thus morning, which was crowded, on the Bench were:—Chief Justice Sim, and Judge Frazer; also ex-members of the Judiciary: Sir Frederick Chapman, and Sir Robert Stout. The Bar was represented among others by the Attor-ney-General. Mr Rolleston, and Crown Solicitor, Mr Fair and Sir J. Findlay and Messrs M. Myers and Grey; Native Land Court by Messrs Jones and McCormick. The Magistrates and Labour and Justice Department were also represented. Mesdame Alpers and family were seated in the ladies’ gallery. Mr Grey, K.C., on behalf of the New Zealand Law Society outlined Mr Alpers career and extended the sympathy of the Bar to his wife and family. He hoped the sincere admiration and tributes- here and in other centres would help to minimise the sense of loss and prove a solace in their grief. Mr Cornish spoke on behalf of the Wellington Law Society. The Chief Justice said Mr Alpers was a just and upright judge, and had many of the qualities that went to the making of a great judge. His sole desire was the ascertainment of truth and the dispensing of justice without fear, favour or affectation. He was kindly and courteous and possessed of great literary attainments, and was vividly interested in the affairs of his fellow men. He made many a friend and would be greatly missed. All bore testimony to the manner in which Mr Alpers bore a serious malady and faced the knowledge of his approaching death.
