Got Out Cheaply. NEW ZEALAND’S START POOR. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received Julv 10 at 5.5 p.m.) * LONDON, July 9. The New Zealand cricketers began a match at Wisbeck against the East of England. The local team won the toss and batted. All were out for 170 runs. * The pitch was soft, and the New Zealanders made up for the loss of the toss by dismissing four of the Eastlanders before lunch. Dacre. Lowry, and Merritt bowled well. Carnegie-Brown was responsible for 32 of the first 48, his contribution including six 4’s. The side were all out for two hundred minutes’ play. In the second innings the Gentlemen made ISI for eight. Kennedy took two for 21. The match was drawn. Essex in the first innings made 139 and in the second 141 for eight, and declared against Somerset, whose first innings score was 116 (Nicholls taking four for 12). In the second Somerset made 57 for seven, (Nicholls taking five for 20. Essex won on the first innings. Playing for Gloucester against Kent, Hammond made 123, and Parker took eight for 79. For Kent, Freeman in the first innings took six for 84, and in the second seven for 98. Gloucester won. Hannon has completed 2000 runs for the season. For Worcester against Derby, Rogers took four for 12. The match was not counted. For Yorkshire against Glamorgan, Macaulay took six for 52. The match was drawn. Kennedy’s feat in taking ten wickets in the match Gentlemen v. Players has only been paralleled by the Kentishman Fielder in 1906. Hearne had a chance to get the last wicket caught and bowled, and many of the spectators thought that he dropped the ball deliberately in order not to spoil Kennedy ’s chance.
