NO COMPENSATION. For Female Worker. JUDGE ADAMS’S RULING. (Per Press Assn.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 8. Rita Gatehouse, formerly waitress, employed in the Silver Service Ritz Restaurant, failed iu the claim against [l. B. Manttan, proprietor, for £3186 •compensation, on account of burns, through her clothes catching fire from ti radiator in the shop. Judge Adams decided that the plaintiff took a risk in going near the radiator, and that Manttan was not liable. SENTENCES PASSED. WELLINGTON, July 8. Tho following prisoners were sentenced by Judge Ostler:— William Guthrie Smith, burglary and thefts of rings and jewellery, at Danne virke, reformative detention for not more than three years. Hugh Goodlet, burglary, at Gisborne, reformative detantion for not more than five years. John Bernard MacDonald, burglary at Picton, reformative treatment for not more than two years. ! Henry Mitchell Fisher, defalcations at Taihape, nine months’ hard labour. DUNEDIN, July 8, At the police court, William Williamson charged with stealing a letter containing £5 at Lawrence, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Charley Carney, stealing an attache case from a motor car, got two months’ imprisonment. Edwin Alphonsous Gawne, converting a motor car to his own use, was admitted to two years ’ probation. John Patrick Abernetby. licensed out from Weraroa training farm and an absconder from service in Taranaki and Matapu, was charged with theft of bicycles at Hawera and Christchurch and goods at Waverley and Wanganui lie was sentenced to three years at the Borstal Institute. Karl Johansen, watersider, pillaging a bottle of whiskey from the steamer Tekoa, was ordered seven days’ impris onment. A detective stated that in 1925, goods valued at £lOBO were missed from this port. Last year’s figure was £407.
