In brilliant weather, reminiscent of the zenith of an antipodean summer Shipman and Berry, who opened for Leicester, relished the fast billiard table wicket, and treated the bowling ruthlessly. This partnership had produced ninety-four, before Blunt caught Berry in two minds, and held an easy catch.

With Armstrong, Shipman carried on in a style that threatened a big total, then through Henderson’s agency a dramatic change come over the game, and for one for 137 at lunch time, the score had become 7 for 164.

At one stage four wickets fell for four runs in as many jovers, and the County suddenly found itself struggling to avoid a follow on. The ninth wicket actually fell when still three short of the required number, but Snary kept up his wicket, and with Skelding averted disaster. Henderson bowled superbly and took five wickets cheaply. Lowry is keeping wickets in place of James, who is indisposed. The attendance was 1200. New Zealand went in again and gave a very poor display. Blunt and Lowry were soon out, and the total at the tea adjournment was only 29 for 2. Page made another fine effort, and except Allcott, was the only one to stand up to the bowling. The former had eleven fours in his 65, and the latter also hit brightly.
