BERLIN, June 13. Otto Kemmericht, the German long distance champion, and Fraulein Edith Jensen, attempted to swim round Heligoland. Jensen succeeded in 227 minutes, but Kemmericht failed, owing to cramp in the leg. SAN FRANCISCO, June 13. There were 68 competitors in the 20mile race for 1000 dollars across the Catalian Channel in open skiffs. The winner, Frank Hagney, who is a veteran Australian oarsman, now at Hollywood, rowed 26 strokes to the minute, and did the journey in 5 hours 40 minutes. Alajor Goodsell (the Australian) was second in 5 hours 52 minutes. AUCKLAND, June 14. The brilliant Auckland bantam, Frank Taylor, till lately looked upon as a likely aspirant for Olympic honours. has been matched by thc Northern Boxing Association for his first professional fight hero on June 27, when he will meet Kid Delaney, of Australia. On the same night, the Australian, Ern Alack, meets Broadfeet, formerly of Waihi, at middle-weight. Both bouts will be of ten rounds. SYDNEY, June 14. The Aforning Herald referring to mechanical hare coursing says: —Alany dogs are developing great cunning in cutting corners cleverly, and the race is not always to the fastest. It cites the case where a leading dog was following the course of the

hare, and two other dogs cut a corner and beat him, and adds—Under the rules of coursing neither dog could have scored a point for this cleverness. SYDNEY, June 14. There is much complaint in the sporting world over Saturday’s Randwick incident, when Castles was prevented from starting .it the last minute in a race for which, the horse was well backed by the public, owing to the owner seeking to amend the papers of entry. It now appears that Castles, besides being wrongly described, was not registered, the registration having lapsed, though he recently started in several races on country and suburban courses.
