A special meeting of the Auckland Uuemployed C’ommiitee will ho held to morrow to consider lhe preparing -or a statement on unemployment} for pro sentation to Mr. Coates ih Auckland _al the week-end. Members -who discussed the matter ’ yesterday agreed that the position was anything but promising and that sdme concerted action in the matter- of providing work for the coming winter would have to be taken. Rev. Jasper Calder said the committed of the City Missioir regarded the position as so serious that he had been requested to drbp all outside interests rind confinv himself to the work of the mission. IN CANTERBURY. < CHRISTCHURCH, February 14. Usually harvesting at this time ot the year aecounts fdr all surplus laboui i|n the- country, but to-day there is a, surplus six times as great as the demand. There are hundreds seeking work on farms. For four jobs the applicants numbered about a hundred, while ovei GO men applied for three jobs at harvest ing. There are unemployed sleeping out’ in the open, and the groat majority are willing workers. The farmers are securing cheap labour at present. A COMPLAINT. (To the Editor). 1 Sir, —Permit me to call attention to the County Council’s actions in regard to t’h'e matter of the unemployed in th p Hohonu Riding. We have a worthy representative in Mr A. Robinson, yet he gives employment in chopping blackberry, -etv., adjacent to the Comity roads to a man already in employment;, while there are men with large families otit of work. Surely this is not the principle of the majority ot the Cortneip? Therefore, it raises the question of a change of representation for our Riding as soon as possible. T am etc.., HOHONU ITE.
