The Engineer reported as follows Urgent maintenance has received attention during the period, but new works have occupied the major portion of the time. There have been two slips on Oinoto Road during the period. The formation of the Whall to Smith Street connecting road is now almostcompleted.. The ,completion of the Smith Street end is held up on account of interference of buildings. This work could be completed by widening out in cut, but the alignment of the road would not be as good as could be obtained by widening out on fill. The corner of Alexander Terrace and Smith Street has been im- 1 proved by filling the depression and by benching the bank, thus improving the view for approaching vehicles. The formation of the approach road to the Swimming Baths is nearing completion. A culvert has yet to be put in. Gravelling will be proceeded with immediately. e A start has been made laying the running planks on Cobden bridge. Notices warning traffic have been erected at the Marsden Road bridges. WATERWORKS. A 4in main has been laid in Palm erston Street South for a distance of 570 feet from the main in Marsden Road and four water services have been laid to the boundary. The pump chamber has been completed and the pump and suction pipes are now in and grouted up. The erection of the corrugated iron superstructure is now in hand and as soon as this is completed far enough the electrical control gear will be installed. The discharge line will then be connected to the present rising main and it is expected that the plant will be running when progress is again reported.

An application for water supply in Ida Street has been received. Provided that at a later uatc the authorised 4in main in Marlborough Street is extended from Palmerston Street South to Ida Street, a 2in main would meet the requirements of the street. The length required immediately is 4 chains, and the estimated cost is £23. The building permits issued from October 13 to October 27 (inclusive) were as follows:—II. Lamont, addition to dwelling; A.
