HORSE KICKS LITTLE GIRL ON FACE. HAMILTON, October 28.

Through being kicked on the head by a horse, Gladys Cate, .15 years oi age, of Rototuna, lies in the hospital in a serious condition. She was strok DIPHTHFJUA AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, October 28. There has been an outbreak of diph theria at Maungawahau School, Mt Eden. The five cases reported and one death are confined to the infants’ department. The outbreak is not considered serious- by the health author*' ties. ACCIDENT ALLY SUFFOCATED. AUCKLAND, October 28. At 7.30 yestfrday morning, Alfred John Brockett, aged 69, who resides as a boarder at the house of Mrs Gillanders, Calliope Road, Devonport, was found in an unconscious condition in bed. When Mrs Gillanders went into his »room to call him, she found the room full of gas. The windows were closed, and the gas jet on the wall was turned on. Dr Hagen was summoned, and attended to Brockett, blithe never regained consciousness, and died at 10 o’clock last evening. The ueceased, who was a. married man, was a bootmaker. AUCKLAND, October 28. At the inquest concerning the death of Alfred John Brockett, his landlady said he was very absent-minded, and he had no sense of smell whatever. In ner opinion, he had turned on the gas. struck a match, and lignred the candle, and then gone to bed. The Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning, caused accidentally. WOMAN KILLED BY BUS. AUCKLAND, Oct. 28. At the inquest concerning the death of Mrs Florence Alice Matyke, who was killed through being knocked down by a motor bus on September 7. Coroner McKean. S.M.. said it was the dutv of the driver, Lionel Arthur MeKaskell, to have exercised more Caution than he did. The only conclusion hc could form was that the bus was negligently driven by McKaskell. \ formal verdict was returned that the deceased died as the result of being knocked down by a bus.

The body was in a decomposed state, and death apparently occurred three weeks ago. Deceased was in the habit of nmk ing prolonged excursions into the back country for rabbits, and consequently he was not missed. Deceased’s parents reside at Hastings.
