HOSPITAL SECRETARY

QUESTION OF SALARY. Discussion by Board. » The question of appointing a permanent Secretary to the Grey Hosptial was discussed at the meeting of the Hospital Board last evening. Lt was reported that Mr Kccble, the present act ing-Se<? rotary, intended only to remain in a temporary capacity. The Inspecting Accountant of the Health Department advised, in a report, that advertisements be immediately inserted in the papers inviting applications for the position of a permanent Secretary, commencing duties on December 1, by which time the affairs of the Board ought to be straightened out. In this matter the Finance Committee recommended the advertising of the position of the Secretary at a salary of £350. Mr F. L. Turley moved that the Finance Committee’s report be adopt ’d, with the exception of the reference to tin* salary, which he moved be altered to £7 per week, with the rigid of re viewing the position in six months’ t imp. The motion was not seconded, where:i. Mr Turley asked why members had changed from their views of last week-, when they were willing to engage Mr Keeblc at a salary of £4OO per annum The Chairman (.Mr J. Brislane) pointed out that th<* appointment was only for the time being. Mr Turley's motion lapsed for want of a seconder. Mr E. Ashton moved and Mr F. Williams seconded, that the Finance Committee’s recommendation be adopted. The secretary. Mr Keeble, pointed out that, when advertising, it should be pointed out that the appointment embraced that of Secretary and House Steward. Mr Turley expressed his surprise that iho position included the duties of both Secretary and House Steward. He thought that the time had arrived when a House Steward should he appointed separately at a salary of £3OO or £4OO per annum. The only way the Board could expect to got any good results was by making such an appointment. The publie wanted the Hospital run on quite different lines than those on The motion was carried, Mr Turley dissenting. Mr Turley: “I want my objection recorded.’' The Chairman: “It will be recorded.”
