WEST HAM GUARDIANS '1 HR EATEN ED. (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received August 10 at 2.15 p.m.) LONDON, August 9. The “Daily Express sillies:—“Owing to the gross extravagance of the the West Ham Board of Poor Law Guardians, the Cabinet is discussing the suspension of the Board, and Mr. Neville Chamberlain taking over its functions. The Board's accounts show a deficit of 434,(XX) and it- owes the Health Ministry £1,510,000 for loans ami interest. It has now come to the end of its tether, and it is tumble to raise any mor© loans. All appeals to it for an economical administration of the poor law have been fruitless. The Board’s district covers Leyton, Walthamston, and Wanstead. Relict is being paid to (18,495 persons. The maximum paypignt is 60s weekly, the relief being sometimes in excess of tho wages paid in that district for a full day's work. The West Ham rates are now 24s in the pound, the poor rates alone being 9s.
