RUGBY FOOTBALL

TO-DAY'S GAMES. At a meeting of the Rugby Cmmi Supporters Association, fixtures ioi to-day were arranged as follow : — Combined Oilices v. Banks, A Ground, Victoria Park, 3.30 p.m. Re force, Mr. A. Adams. State School v. Cobden Sclu.ol, B. Ground, V ictoria Park 3.30 p.m. Referee, Mr. \Y. Rothwell. The first representative Wednesdax match is scheduled for July 8 at ti.» kitika when Grey will meet Westland. A decision to arrange such a fixture was reached at the weekly meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union Supporters’ Association, held last evening. The Association has decided to attention to the fact that Wednesday players must, adhere to the. rules ol the West Coast Rugby Union, lhe rule regarding the necessity of pla\ ■ ers applying for transfers before playing for another club, was particularly instanced. The following players will represent Combined Officers in their match with the banks to-day at 3.30. (AH players being requested to assembk at the Union Hotel at 3.15 shaip). Braithcwaitc, Mosley, Brown, Nash, Melrose, Jamieson, Brown. Spark, Parkyn. Best, Negri 1U" nolds. Smith and Seebeck. — (Notes bv “Observer. ”) Last Saturday’s display of Rugby was not by any means up to Rep standard, and unless Buller can show better football, Marlborough have nothing to fear in regard to the Shield match. The referee was to blame to a certain extent in regard to the mono, tonous play, as time after time there' wore tussles in the line out in which the ball became locked for two minutes on end, and a lot of time could have been saved by a serum being ordered immediately. Another notice, able feature was the lifting in the scrums, neither side being penalised. The game would have also been better both for players and spectators alike had the Union supplied balls that Lad been used previously, as both sides then handled better. Davis, full back for Buller, played a good sale game. The two Buller wings. Thornton and O’Brien, had little to do. and were starved by the Bernard is a promising player who should make a name for himself. ( orb;,- was fair. Griffiths was safe in defence, but never let tin 1 ball go when it came his way, and was caught in possession time after time. Bidwell was only fair. The Buller forwards were a hard wurking lot. but hardly up to previous Ibiller packs. Goodall, Lockey. Ford and O'Neill wen* the best. For the ('oast, Jamieson al full back did not play his usual game, and was beaten by the nexv ball. J. Steel did not appear to exert himself, but he got no chances whatever, whereas it should have been I lie- iim of the other backs to g'ive him work. Lamberton and IL Steel were both weak. Probably, Reynolds would have been >een to better advantage. Thomas was only patchy. At times he did some fair work, making some good runs and tackling well, but lie spoilt it all l.iy holding on or kicking. He was not as liberal with Steel as in ('lub matches. Warnes was, in my opinion, the best (’oast back and played a good game, making few mistakes. MuKav also played well and got rid of the ball at the right time. McCleary, the Coast half, was good on defence, but was slow in attack and gave some wild passes, which might easily have caused a score against his side. Jardin played a hard i game, as also did Walker. Brown, Perham ami Griffen. Ai. Jamieson was good in the loose, but should put his weight into the ‘■m rmn. McNabb was not seen much, whilst Devaney played well for half an hour, but he and McNabb got their share in Hie scrums, Hie ball frequently hanging in the back row. RUGBY UNION RI-.PS Sir.—As a supporter of Rugoy Union Football, 1 would like to s.e another match arranged between i<. kitika and Greymouth before the team is picked to go to Btiller, as I am sure a better team than the one that played Buller could bo played [ in the field. I would suggest the following- team for Greymou. J Goodall, Thomas, Warnes, Rcynoi is. Mosley, McKay, Brown, Jardcn, Pring, Bell, Brown, Lamberton. JajiTieson, Burley and Ohartcris. I have left Steel out, .so as to give He selectors a better chance of dcciu m’: who is the best wing three-quarter to go in the team with Steel.
