SHIPPING STRIKE
IN AUSTRALIA Expected Next Month OWNERS FORCING THE ISSUE. SYDNEY, June 20. It is expected there will be a shipping crisis at the end of July wheel the articles of practically all the vessels plying between Australian ports will have expired. The crews of over • per cent of the steamers sign on and off at Sydney, which is expected to be Hie storm centre. It is expected that the Commonwealth Lwie will be drawn into the dispute on Monday, when the Esperance Bay arrives. The articles expire' on Tuesday. It appears certain that the crew will de. ma Ml an insertion in the conditions of a clause in the new agreement. The seamen offered to modify the original clause, whereto objection was taken by th e owners who, however definitely refused 1 agree to the «iew proposal. The new clause asked that wages and general working conditions which were in operation on June 4 1925 be applicable to all members of the union employed on the vessels. The watersiders will support th? seamen. (Received Juno 21 at 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 21. There is little likelihood of the solution of the shipping dispute. The owners state they are firm in their decision not to continue any form of job control methods. A special meeting of the Marine Transport Group is being held on Monday, when all the Unions interested in the expected upheaval will be asked to define their attitude. If a strike eventuates, it will extend throughout the Commonwealth.
