June 17. ‘lt is hardlv necessary for me to say that the si mini victory of the Government candidate in the Franklin bye. election contest will give the greatest satisfaction to a very large majority of the people of New Zealand,” said the Primo Minister to-night. “It constitutes a remarkable tribute to the menioß’ of the illustrious statesman who represented the constituency in Parliament through almost the whole period of his political career, and whoso loss Franklin, in common wit-h the rest of the Dominion, honours today. Moreover the result shows, in no uncertain manner, that the electors have turned a deaf oar to fanciful and socialistic doctrines which were placed before them. Mr McT-ennan’s victory will be hailed with nlensurc bv all nf our fellow citizens, whn have cause of sound and stable Government at hno rt. ’'
