CHRISTCHURCH NOTES.

'Onr Ow a Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, June IG. Mrs J, Murdoch, of Hokitika, is a Visitor to Christchurch. Mr J. Ring returned to Grey.nouth by the express on Saturday. Miss Rita Moss, who has been visiting relations in Greymouth, returned to Christehurach on Saturday. HEAVY GALE. Not for many years has Christchurch been swept by such a fierce gale as during the past four days. Commencing last Friday the gale swept down from the sou’west, reaching- its climax on Saturday night. Throughout Saturday it raged, causing all but senior games of football to be postponed, and increasing in violence in the evening, when the wind, reached almost hurri. eane violence. Throughout the night the wind howled, tearing up trees and blowing down fences and, in a few eases, rooting up telegraph polos and cutting off the electric light in some parts oJ thq| city. Some windows were broken by the hail and other open ones by the 'wind, which tore them from th,eir fastenings, and in banging them to and fro burst them from their hinges. To.day the weather had moderated considerably, but the wind freshened early this evening and it is again raining solidly. Conditions point to a continuance of the storm. GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S VISIT. Though he comes from a. land where the climate is rigorous in winter, the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergus. son, was not proof against the sou’west, gale which came north with him on Friday. The cold nipped him and brought on an attack of lumbago, which has confined him to his bed since Friday night. In consequence all his engagements have been cancelled, though Her Excellency, the Lady Alice Fergusson, has carried on, visiting the hospital, reviewing Scouts and Girl Guides, and so on. To.morrow night, she will take, His Excellency s place at the Chamber of Commerce dinner when she will respond to the toast of “His Excellency.” NEW BISHOP. Will the Synod have to select another Bishop? Probably, Yes; for it was stated by Anglican clergymen here to-day that Canon Clifford Woodward, of St Peter’s, Kensington, Lon. don, has declined the proffered honour, though a London cable announces that ho will most likely accept. It is understood that there is a second choice, in which case a. specially appointed Sub-Committec of the Synod will meet late this week and decide whether a call will be issued or not. Meanwhile Christchurch is without an Anglican Bishop for the first tune in very many years. BIG LEAGUE MATCH. West Coasters assembled en masse on Saturday to witness the game between the West Coast.Otago team and Canterbury on Monica Park. They were treated to a fine display of football, in spite of the bad weather, in which the Coast men were well to the fore throughout. Mouatt. the most outstanding player on the field, and his inclusion in the rep team was assured before the game was over. Clears, McKay and O’Hallahan, were also prominent in the play and pleased the fans mightily.
