The little coastal steamer Kapiti, which arrived at Wanganui this morning, met the full force of the southerly gale, and her trip from Wellington occupied 64 hours. The worst period was on Sunday night, when she was fighting against a raging tempest, with walls of water threatening to overwhelm her at any time, and the steamer was continuously enveloped in blinding spray as high as the top of her funnel. Tho Kapiti reached the river entrance, but had to put back to Kapiti Island for shelter. The Kapiti was tossed at times around like a cork. Her crew now think that she is capable of weathering anything. Haven of Refuge FOR SMALLER VESSELS IN QUEEN CHARLOTTE SOUND. BLENHEIM, June 16. steamer John, of the Holm Line; while there are tour vessels sheltering under Cape Campbell. Three of those have been identified as the Calm, th' Wootton and the Wairau. I The fourth is a very small craft, (and believed to be the Cygnet, until that vessel turned up at Pieton. Tho unidentified vessel is possibly the trawler Futurist, about which some anviety has been felt, but no definite nows can he obtained. THE JOHN COMES TN. Arrival at Pieton at 1.45 of the John put. an end to tho anxious fears which have been expressed as to her safety, following on the sighting of rockets in Cook Strait last night. The little vessel left Wang'.nui for Wellington nt 4.10 lon Saturday, in company with the Titoki and the Invercargill, and she struck the full force of the gale about four hours after leaving port.
