BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) A special meeting of the. Blackball Miners’ Union was held on. 'Sunday last when it was unanimously decided to hold the usual May Day sports and demonstration, and a strong committee was appointed to take charge of the arrangements. Providing the epidemic restrictions arc lifted, the postponed children’s picnic ‘will bo held in conjunction, and a grand May Day social and dance will take place in Mcttrick’s Hall on May Day evening. The chief events on the sports programme arc: .100yds handicap, 220yds handicap, 440yds handicap, 120yds hurdle handicap, 440 yds footballers handicap, place kicking of football (League and Soccer), throwing the hammer and discus, etc., and the -usual baby show. Events are confined to members of industrial or trade unions. The Blackball silver Band will be in attendance, and a speaker has been secured for the occasion. Provided the weather is on good behaviour, a successful function i; assured. Mr Tom Moore lias donated a picture show to the sports fund, the date fixed being April 24th. Boa. Union intend holding a smoker on May Day Eve, and arc leaving nothing undone to make the function Boa miners lost a day through their Working gear not being dry. As the fault is with the management, a day’s Xvage ha.s been claimed for all affected. Blackball Union endorsed a resolution emanating from the Otago Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union which denounces the Otago Labour Representation Committee for attempting to dictate to that Union who should be its dele;, tcs. Evidently some aspiring political pigmies think they rule the »loostL and that -organised labjour is subservient to their desires. These will *l>ai the power of control will not be lightly passed over by the large majority of Industrial Unionists. In order to speed up things a little, another shift has boon put on in the Blackball Mine rise. Mr W. Richardson, a member of the contract party driving the rise, had the misfortune to get his scalp severely cut by a fall of rock, and is under medical treatment. Blackball Soccer team report having a good time at Reofton. Bill Hampson bad his shooting boots on. and helped Limself to a bag of five goals. The League football game at Blackball proved a a cry strenuous and willing affair, with very few flashes of real football displayed. League is> claimed to be refined Rugby, but during the Mnrist-Roa game, nine players were outed ami attended to for re*! pairs. McKcllar, of Christchurch, is visiting Blackball on business. The Domain will be busy on Sunday. when two League games and one Soccer game are io be staged. Roa League team will have to find one or two substitutes for Sunday, to fill vacancies caused by injuries in their last game.
