CIVIC FAREWELL

MRS. SKOGLUND AND FAMILY An indication of the esteem in which the Skoglund family who have been associated with the town of Greymouth for the past half century, is held, was the large attendance at the Municipal Chambers yesterday afternoon at & civic farewell and presentation in honour of the family. The Mayor (Mr W. 11. Parfitt) presided, lie was pleased to see such a large number of old residents present to do honour to an esteemed resident, in Mrs Skoglund. For fifty years Mrs Skoglund had In on on the Coast, 48 years alone being spent in Greymouth. Iler late husband had occu pied many public positions, and was Mayor of the town from 1896-7-8, form he had been prominent in many undertakings for the good of the district. Among - the good works were the organisation of functions for tin* raising of money for the building of the Gid Peoples’ Home in 1897, and for the rein f of destitute persons. Mrs Skoglund had reared a. family of which she could well be proud. Ono of her sons, Philip, was Town Clerk of Stratford, another Kossuth had been a member of the Greymouth Borough .Council; Karl had won the howling championship; whilst Miss Augusta Skoglund hud figured in mu-dcal circles as an organ ist. Th> Deputy-Mayor (Mr .1. W . Green slade) said he was sorry that jhe Skoglund family was leaving Greymouth, as they had been associated with it in all its ups and downs, and just when things were getting brighter, they were going away. Doogan said that when anything of a humanitarian nature was re<|iiired to be done, flie Skoglund family were among the first to do it. The absence of the family would be a severe loss to the community at Messrs F. A. Kitchingham. Dr. \V. McKay, T. E. V. Seddon, T. Jones. E. I. Lord also paid tribute, and claimed a lengthy association with the family. The Mayoress then made the presentation of a leather wallet, containing a large sum of money, to Mrs Skoglund . Mr Kos. Skuglund replied on behalf of 1i is mother, stating that he was deeply grateful for the many kind words spoken about the family.
