BLOCKAGE AT ELLIS ISLAND.
NEW YORK, July 21. Some idea of the problem set U.S. in coping with the enforcement of the immigration law can be gained from the fact that 28,000 immigrants were admitted to Ellis Island alone during tire first week of July. One hundred inspectors worked day and night, subjecting their incomes to minute examination. Twelve hundred immigrants, a considerable number of whom were British have been detained, pending the decision of Washington authorities in their cases. A larger number of these will he deported owing to the large numbers of arrivals a?.;d limited accommodation. YTany immigrants suffer great discomforts, especially recently during tic pitolongel heat spell, despite the erforts of the officials to reduce the suffering to a minimum.
