PROGRESS LEAGUE. At. the last, meeting it. was resolved that :l committee of seven, to consist of president, vice-president and treasurer, and four others be elected. The appointment of a secretary at £l2 per annum was deputed to the Executive Committee. Air J. Patterson was elected President, and Air A. B. West was elected vice-president. Air F. de Tourettes treasurer, and -Messrs A. Al. Carroll, W. J. Morris, Willis, and Flintoff the •executive committee. -V letter from the Post and Telegraph Department stated the request for the installation of a metallic tern phone in Reef ton was referred by the Post and Telegraph Department, to the District Engineer at Christchurch. The request that the specifications for all public works on the West Coast be lodged at Reef ton was referred to the Department. The Chairman referred to the unemployment in the district. Air Morris moved that letters be sent to the member for the district and the Prime Minister, pointing out that a large number of men were unemployed and tho position was becoming acute, and. that orders for steam coal be placed in the district, also that the Public Works Department bo asked to start relief works to give temporary assistance. Air Carroll asked if it would not bo advantageous tn ask for a definite work. Tho Chairman suggested that. the improvement of Alaruia Road be asked for. £lOOO would put that road in order and provide relief. ATr Carroll seconded the motion, which was carried. It was carried tlujt the County Chair man be asked to telegraph to the Premier and member for the district and endorse the representations. Air Wills moved that the County Council be a>ke<l for a vote to the funds of the League. Seconded by Mr Lockington and carried. Mr Austin moved that a letter be sent to the Alaruia South Progress League informing them that this League would bo j’hased to assist them in any matter pertaining to their welfare, provided they applied for sm a support. The Chairman referred to the separation movement Hint was being moved in Alaruia South from Alurrhison County. This portion of the district should belong to the Inangahun County. It would be of benefit to bofli Alaruia South and. Reefton if this district were merged into t l ”' Inanga hua County. i Air I. Patterson referred to the Coal Mines Bill and the amendments introduced. The royalties were proposed ’to be increased, and could be spent anywhere tho Government desired. .It was little short of confiscation. lie moved that a letter be sent to th-. 1 member for the district and Alinistcr of Alines, pointing out the iniquity ol imposing the additional royalty or payment on the assignment sale or leas-o of a coal lease, and that a copy of the letter be sent to the Secretary of the Aline Own-ers’ Association a£ Wellington. Air Aforris seconded Ihe motion, which was carried. It was resolved to ask the County Council for the use of a room for meetings, and that the third Alonday in each month be the night of meeting.
