TO-DAY’3 SEVEN-A-SIDE. COMPETITION COMMENCES 11 A.M. The results of to-day’s seven a si le tournament, which is the main event in the local Rugby world to-day will depend— not entirely but to a larger extent—on the condition of the weather. Jf the ground is dry some very last play will be witnessed. Thera; seems to bn only out* team in the Senior competition—Star A.—which on past performances should stoop the pool easily. The Marist team looks poor. The junior coniest will work out very interesting and will probably eventuate in a final game between Marist and United. The former have the ] ace and the Inter the weight — and some pace too, Cobden may be in at the semi-final, but Ngahcre will have to show improved form io do any good. Not having seen Lake Brunner in action I cannot predict their performance, but they have something to contend with here. Interesting indeed will be the fourth grade games, Marist and l’nited will probably be the most inu renting. The Marist team although small plays scientific football, while the size of the l’nited boys cannot be overlooked. State* (School boys are hefty and perform v.vit. The opening match for tin* second round for the Stallard Cup will be plaved to-morrow, when Ikamatua will meet Pirates on the Racecourse. These teams are leading for the championship with four points each, so that interest in the match is very keen. Ikamatua brut ’ Pirates in their first match, but Pi: -J » s have improved a lot since, winning their last two games, including an easv win over the Junction team, who in turn defeated Ikamatua last week by 14 points to nine. Ikamatua has a fine set of forwards and the makings of a very fair back team. T! ev are badly in need of an old head in their inside combination, and to tha - . must be attributed their defe: t by Junction. In their first two matches Iknmatua relied on their forwards and won Veil but in their last game they play€«l Io their backs, who failed, simply through inexperience. By playing wide instead of deep they left openings vhid. the Junction team, playing : bout 14 forward . wi re not slow to lake a l hy-.iitage of. 1 rates w.ll Lave a much Stronger pack than in the previous game. l , though some of their best backs are not available. They should more than hold their own with the visiting term. Mr M. Banks has been appointed referee for this game.
