A special look-out was kept for any sign of the Manurewa, but without result. The grounding of the schooner Valmnric on the western end of Farewell Spit in February last showed the necessity for an extra precaution in the navigation of vessels in the locality. It was previously known to some masters of vessels that go through Cook Strait that the Spit was shoaling up in certain places. The information contained it the “New Zealand Pilot,” ninth edi lion, 1919, pages 280 and 2-81, state? that tho water shoals to less than fiv< fathoms at one mile from the westerr part of tho Spit. It is now officially announced that owing to the nature oi the locality, soundings within one mill of the northern shore of the Spit may be expected to vary considerably frou those shown on the charts, and vessels rounding tho Spit against adverse winds should make frequent use of tho lead or tho inshore tack, and go about wher the first shoal cast is obtained. The charts, etc., affected are Admiralty charts Nos. 2616 and 3620, ‘‘New Zea land Pilot,” ninth edition, 1919, pages 280 and 281. TELEGRAMS. LYTTELTON, May 29.
