WORSE THAN BULL FIGHTS
ENGLISH GRAND NATIONAL. PUBLIC INUIGNATION Al UGLY OBSTACLES. (Received April 2 at 5-5 p.m.) LONDON, April 1. The yearly cutburst of indignation, following on the Grand National, in consequence of a fatal accident, due to the ugly obstacles in the race, is becoming mjoro ill tens-?. Two horses were killed in the recent Grand National. The newspapers havei since been inundated with correspondence, some writers asserting that the Spanish bull fighting is less cruel -„han the Grand National, in which there are thoroughbred horses dead and dying, while other competitors are jumping over their bodies. Th(' public indignation is so hot that Whitaker, the wellknown owner, trainer and rider, whose uwtint. Arrowdale, fell when he had a winning chance, wrote to the authorities suggesting alterations in the conditions of the race, providing only first class jumjiers be allowed to compete, and that the remainder 1h? grouped in a junior Grand National, thus ensuring reasonably sized fields. Rt. Hon. Mr Short (Home Minister), replying, to questions on tb.e subject in the House of Commons, stated that he has not the power to prohibit the Grand National. Tf, however, a horse is entered for a race for which it is unfitted, it is a breach of the Protection to Animals Act. He has no such evidence- that, imeh was the ease.
