RUNANGA NOTES.

(Qur Own Correspondent). The State mines resumed operations on January 5 (Thursday), the Co-op-erative miners on Monday, 9th, and the men employed on the Runanga-Point Elizabeth railway also made a start last Monday week. Our annual picnic from the State Collieries will be held on Cass Square, Hokitika, on next pay Saturday, January 28. This outing is eagerly looked forward to and if the weather is fine it should be a most enjoyable affair. Our local Municipal Band will be in attendance and provide a programme of music during the day. The Executive of the Union and the management have been endeavouring during the last few days to come to an agreement, but without success. The management not only want a reduction of wages, but wants an increase of an hour ’s work on back Saturday. As the seven-hour day has been in vogue for the last 14 years on Saturdays, it is not likely to be given up without a struggle. as we are under the National Agreement at present we are not so badly off.
