With a vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting was adjourned until January 10th. CONCERT AND DANCE. The Convent Schoolroom at Brunner was packed to the doors on the occasion of their school concert on Friday last. About one-half of the items were contributed by tho scholars in a clever and artistic manner, and reflected no small measure of credit upon their mentors, the Sisters of Mercy. The large audience Avas very appreciative, and recalls A\ r cre the order of the evening. This, Tn itself, AA-ill serve to indicate to readers tlie popularity of the performers and their varied programme. When speaking or Avriting from a general standpoint, one cannot individualise, but certainly fl meed of praise is due to those talented artists Avho came from Greymouth to assist in making the entertainment the success it proA^ed to be. . The A'ocal and musical items, contributed by star performers of the reelocutionary competitions, wctc in ' themselves worth the admission fee, land fortunate indeed were the people present to hear them. After the termination of an excellent programme, Father McGrath mounted the platform, and briefly thanked the apprcci- . alive audience and self-sacrificing performers for the assistance rendered by them for so Avorthy an object — the ! cause of education. He strcsse'd the attainment of scholarships by all pupils, stating that notwithstanding the [partisan attitude of the Education Department, it Avas their intention to reward all successful Catholic scholars. Though he regretted that the Education Department had draivn tli« i;v> «■" --i". marcation, as bctAvecn State and private schools, in this matter, he Avas in nowise dismayed, provided they remained staunch and true to themselves and devoted to the cause of education. In conclusion, the speaker trusted that the coming Xmas Day Avould be for one and v all a perfect day, and their future be happy and prosperous. The hall Avas quickly cleared, and dancing was soon in full swing. Some i twenty eouplcs, old and young' tripped merrily to the charming music provided by an impromptu orchestra. Were I asked to interpret tho prob--1 aide thoughts of the merry-makers,- 1 would do so in the Avords of the poet, who Aviotc: "On with the dance; let you be unconfincd. . No sleep till morn, when youth and beauty meet, to ' ( chase the glowing hours with flying ' feet," etc., and Avhen the old A'illage clock Avas about to strike the hour of tAVo, a pleasant cA r cning's enjoyment was brought to a close.
