'• " m (Our Own Correspondent.) BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held on Tues- t day evening last. Present: — His Worship the Mayor (Mr. F. Williams), Crs. Morgan, Hallinan, Richardson, Williams, Pryor, Harper and McDonald. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and outward correspondence approved. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows: — From W. Hill (Taylorville), asking that, as he was a pensioner, he lbe exempted from payment of rates. After discussion as to the merits and demerits of his case Cr. Richardson moved that his request/ be granted. This was seconded by Cr. McDonald and carried. From F. Denton (secretary of the proposed Power Board) submitting questions re land values in the bOrough and requesting an early reply. The Mayor stated that he had attended the recent conference of local bodies, by invitation^ and assured the conference of his Council's co-opera-tion in the hydro-electric scheme. The Mayor's action in this matter was confirmed, and the Clerk was instructed to supply the information asked for. From Mr. J. Hannau, solicitor, asking for further data in connection with the Council's claim in the Georgehan Estate case— The Clerk reported having supplied the information. From Mr. Carse, re alterations in a recent property transfer. — In forma- , tion already supplied by the Clerk. From J. Ponder, drawing the Council's attention to the unsatisfactory | [state of a drain near his premises. 1 It was resolved that this work be j attended to at the earliest opportunity, but that the Council could not under- j take to construct a wooden approach. J From J. Rodgers,, stating that he had" j purchased a cottage from W. Hartshornc. - i Cr. McDonald moved that Mr. Rodg- i ers be informed that the transfer j would not be effected until the rate j account for arranged for, and that in the meantime, proceedings be instituted for recovery of overdue rates. This was seconded by Cr. Richardson and carried. . From J. Henderson, Secretary for Labour, Wellington re half-holiday for next year. It A\as resolved that the Clerk supply the information. From Hon. Coatcs, Minister of Pub- j lie Works, re money grants formerly voted, but at present not expended, \ and asking for the Council's inten- j tions re same. It was resolved that the Minister be informed that the only work unlikely to be proceeded Avith Avas the Stillwater Creek groin grant of £50. From J. Drake, explaining the delay re submission of plans of proposed Council chambers. — Received. From the Acting-Public Trustee, stating the procedure necessary incidental to the Council's proposed loan of £1000 from that Department. — Received.. The Town Clerk's miscellaneous report, was received as satisfactory. The- chairman of the Works Com-"

mittce "was empowered to secure suit able labour for road work. Cr.. Eicliardson drew the Council's attention to the dangerous state of a culvert at Dobson, and lie was supported by other Councillors. The Mayor stated that- nothing could bo done in the way of permanent repairs until the plana were completed for same. * Cr. Richardson moved that a deputation consisting of the Mayor and Town Clerk approach the Public Works Engineer, and urge the necessity of facilitating this important work. This was seconded" by Cr. Williams and carried. ' Or. Pryor drew the Council's attention to the very defective railings on the Stillwatcr road near the tunnel, and moved that the necessary timber be procured to repair same. This was seconded by Cr. Morgan and carried. Gr. Harper proposed that timber be procured to repair a dangerous bridge on the Kokiri' road. This was seconded by Cr. Hallinan and carried. Cr. Williams asked if Cr. Ryan's resignation had been finally dealt with, and received a reply iii the affirma, tivc, and after receiving correspondence relating thereto, ho moved that tlio Council grgatly appreciated the past services of* Mr. Ryan as a consistent worker for their municipal affaro and regretted that circumstances had arisen which necessitated his retirement from municipal activities. This was seconded by Cr. Hallinan and carried unanimously. The Town Clerk applied for ' two weeks' leave of absence, as from Jan. Ist.— This was unanimously agreed to. Accounts amounting to £74 19s 7d were passed for payment. The Clerk submitted a rough financial report, and stated that the rates due Avcre not coming in very freely at h present.
