SPORTING

RACING NOT£». , The French Government recently purchased ten more trotting stallions at a cost of £5000. I F. D. Jones has received a yesrnng^ sister to Kilrea (K'ilbroney — Arai-te-Uru) from Ellerslie to put through the kindergarten class on behalf of Mr. C . Reid. One of Mr. J. F. Buchanan's recent importations in Maud, by Desmond — Julia Mannering, has foaled a bay colt to Cyglad by Cyllene— Gadfly, at the Kinlpch Stud. A message from Hobart says that Mr E. J. Watt's Sea Pink won the Hobart Cup, Royal Pride being second, and Bucklaw third. The totalisator receipts at Takapuna exceeded those of the previous year by £12,739, a sufficient answer to those who wish to go against public opinion and suppress racing. G. Matthew's string for the C.J.C. Meeting was augmented by the addi : tion of Kilrush, Kilkee, and Kilfinn. They, with Honesty and Kilboyne, who recently arrived from Trentham, will represent Mr. J. B. Reid at Riccarton on Saturday. The death-knell of the yards system of handicapping trotters has been sounded. In another column of this issue it will be noticed that the Metropolitan Trototing Clug handicaps for the meeting to be held on February 10th are- all made put in th£ old style, viz., seconds and not yards. I An attempt was to be made by Mr. Edwards at the Forbury Park T«»* I ting Club's meeting to lower the track record of 2min 8 3-ssec with his Aus-tralian-bred mare Adelaide Direct. The mare was off colour, however, and ,th e matter was dropped. The attempt , may be made at the club's autumn meeting. "Whalebone," in the Auckland "Star," says: "The presence of a wellknown official in the judge's box at the recent Foxton Meeting, in addition to the judge, gave rise to * Iq* of adverse comment. There was no* the slightest suggestion that things were not in. order, but the practice is one that should not we encouraged" A Southern writer states that the starting at Forbury Park on the first j day was not up to standard, and that the results of at least three races were affected by faulty dispatches. On the .second day of the meeting there -was a marked improvement in the starting, and the racing was correspondingly better. I M. Hobbs took through to Riccarton a couple of two-year-olds belonging to W. G. Stead, who have just been taken in hand. One of them is a brother to Kilboy, and the other is a colt by Ringform from a Birkennead mare. Hobbs has Sweet Corn engaged at the Dunedin J.C. Meeting, but the rest of the team will be given a let-up prior to being prepared for the autumn campaign. I The most successful jockey in Ireland last year was the amateur, W. T. 'Parkinson, a son of the successful trainer. Parkinson rotfp over the jumps, as well as on the flat, and up to November iSth had won 50 out of the 137 races in which he figured. Of the professionals T. Burns did best with 40 wins for iqi rides. It is another injustice to Ireland that Burn.* is. a Scotchman. METROPOLITAN TROTTING MEETING.
