He keeps her under the protection of his roof, and soon finds himself deeply in love with her. All- goes well till a strange rider passing the cabin calls for. a drink and sees Claire. Claire takes a sudden liking for the newcomer, and offers no objection to. being kissed. At that moment Houghton. 'the sportsman, returns, and there is an angry scene. Houghton takes a knife , and marks the girl's shoulder, to indicate- his possession of her. The ttcwconver is dissatisfied, however, and ■ ufter a series of extraordinary happenings Claire kills Houghton and, regaining her- right mind, turns to Kent for his protection.
