A Chinese named Joe Bung was noticed by the local Customs. authorities to be making- a number of trips up north. Suspicion being aroused by his actions, a. watch was' set upon him-,-and yesterday, ; .when landing at the wharf from the Afahura, he was arr rested by Detective Cambell, \vho.took him to one side, searched him, ■■'.and found in his possession about twelve pounds' worth .of opium in a form suitable for smoking. ' "■'.".' V • This mbrriing in the Magistrate's Court, he was with the offence and:plea"ded'.guilty. ' ' The information was laid by Mr. Devenish, Collector of Customs, who asked that the maximum penalty, of be inflicted, as the Customs authorities had been/trying to stop the practice for a considerable time. . Inspector Phair detailed the circumstances of the man's arrest, 1 and mentioned that accused had been fined £3 on 27th, 1907, for ...opium; smoking. ' After hearing- the case, the Magistrate said he was: quite satisfied that the opium /had been brought into the district .for .smoking purposes.. He would.fine accused £40. <' :
