HOW THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED
Mr Brown was immediately escorted to the sports depot, and there the real facts were related by him. This is what he had to say: — "Birch was going strongly and was making good time. He was very fresh and had not

He tried to dodge the animal/ when has front wheel suddenly collapsed, and; he came doyfai on his head. He. was picked up unconscious, and was ' still in that statte, when I left him in the motor car and canw on. He' was riding a winning, race all the way. ,He was doing 35''miles an hour- in some places, and between Ghf istchurch : and Oamaru he averaged 22 miles. He musfc. have broken the record but for the accident. He had only 14 miles to go, and half an hour to do it in to have., established/si freak record for the distance.
