MUNICIPAL MATTERS
PALMERSTON N., Feb 28. The Palmerston North Borough Council held a special meeting last evening in response to a- requisition, signed 'by three councillors, to consider the matter of the resignation of Mr Smith, curator of the borough reserve. Cr. Clausen moved and Cr. Matheson seconded that Mr Smith be asked to reconsider his resignation. Councillors generally pointed out that Mr Smith was a very valuable man, and had done pood work in the reserves, and it would .be a pity to lose him. The Mayor (Cr. Essex) refused to take -the motion, 'saying that he had been deliberately insulted by Mr Smitlh through the press. After a prolonged and heated discussion Cr Nash proposed .that ithe matter jbe referred to the reserves committee be power to act. Cr Stub'bs seconded the motion. >The Mayor said die amendment was useless, and if the committee reported that the resignation 3i.ad been withdrawn 'he would be compelled to m&Tuse iPo -'atcep't jthe report. The Mayor sta-ted that" he would .be prepared to consider the matter if Mr Smith withdrew the letter he had written to the press and publicly apologise to' him for the statements he had made. Evidently the council adjourned till Tuesday* next without eithen motion of -amendment being put, or definite decision feeing 1 arranged at. , At a meeting of t-fie Palmerston North :Borougih 'Council held last evening it was decided to instruct the Borough Solicior to issue a writ against th-c .Gas Company to determine the validity of its agreement with the council.
