RUN OVER BY THE TRAIN.

A very painful sensation was caused in town last night when it became known that a serious' accident -had befallen Mr. P. McDonnell, the stationmaster at Runanga, on the State Collieries line, and that both his legs had 'been run over by a train. It appears that Mr McDonnell, who had been to State Collieries to weigh a coal special, was returning to Runanga and was riding on the engine. When nearing his. own house at Runanga he jtumped off the engine but his coat caught and he fell with his feet under the train which passed over his legs. The driver in charge of a coach (which ha dconveyed a concert party, from town) who was standing ,by his horses heard a- cry for help and on going over found Mr McDonnel lying near the rails. He had, however, managed to work his feet off the line. . The train was delayed and the sufferers' legs Avere bound up. The left, one was the more seriously injured and ;was practically severed a little below the knee. Dr Millington rendered assistance as did also' the coach driver. <Mr McDonnell was brought on to town by the train, which ran out to the hospital where vt^e sufferer received further attention. Mr McDonnell never lost consciousness during the whole of this. trying period and was alble to converse with Mr Ashley, the Traffic Manager, when the train arrived in town. v Much sympathy is felt for Mr McDonnell,^who is a young and capable officer of the department, and. also for Mrs McDonnell. Mr McDonnell has Ibeen in charge at Runanga since the first station was opened and prior to that at State Collieries. , .
