■» ■ ■■■ (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, Jan 27. A very severe thunderstorm and fihowe'S of hail passed over part of Christchurch this afternoon. The thunder W"S exceedingly loud, and some time after the clouds had passed away there was a sudden shower of hiil stones as big as pigeons' eggs. First of all they fell separately, but as sooa as the shower increased in density and became very heavy, large numb.rs ©f glass verhandahs in the streets were seriously -lamaged and several windows were broken by the hailstone-, which made quite white for a time. The horses in the streets snffered considerably from the force with which they were struck by hailstones. The storm last' d for about 15 minutes. It was preceded by immense clouds of dust, which enveloped the city during the storm. The ground in Lancaster Park was struck by lightning and a largt. rent caused. Tbe track of the storm was very narrow and no hail fell in some suburbs. The news from Leeston states thafc great damage has been dona to the crops in Ellesmer . district.
