South African Financial Arrangements

The thirty-five millions loan was a compromise between the forty millions proposed by ihe Rand financiers and Chamberlain's suggestion of thirty millions. Tnis leaves twelve millions for new public works. The re:erence to the war loan at the meeting was representative of the great mininghouses (excepting that of Mr J B Robinson) who suggested a thirty million contribution. ACsnference of trader merchants and miners of the Rand afterwards, r ratified by seventy four to four, was the result of complaints on the subject.
