The weather was fine with a good wicket which wore well. Tho general opinion is that the Eng- ■ lishmen were out-classed at every point. Their display was altogether deplorable. Trumper's was a. masterly and stylish performance. He is regarded as amply justified in his inclusion in the team. Hay ward was missed by Kelly when he had only scored a single. Jones, Noble, Howell, Trumble, and Layer were the bowlers on the Australian side. The fielding of the Englishmen was excellent. J Hay ward was caught in the slips after 3£ hours, making IP 4's. [ The sth wicket fell for 160 Tyldesley lifted one to cover pomt — 6 for 166. Jessop skied one to long field — 7 for 177. Jones just tipped Lilley's bails off — 8 for 222. 5 The 9th wicket fell for 240. M'Laren batted 3J hours without giving a chance. He made 16 f ourers. Mead brought the innings to a close j without scoring.
