Cordelia Botkin, the San Francisco poisoner, has been sentenced to imprisonment for life. The case had peculiar features. Mrs Botkin, a married woman, supposed to be living with her own husband, carried on in San Francisco for several months with a married man named Dunning, on a visit from Delaware state. When Dunning left to return, as was understood, to his own wife, Mrs Botkin sent by post to the wife a parcel of poisoned sweets. They arrived while the husband was serving in Cuba as a war correspondent. They were sampled by Mrs Dunning and her sister, Mrs Dean, who both died. The poisoned sweets were traced to Mrs Botkin. Then arose the question where she should be tried. Extradition to Delawere was applied for, but refused, on the ground that you cannot extradite a woman who has never been absent f i-ora her own state, and is nob therefore a "fugitive" from the state applying for her arrest. Mrs Botkin was then tried in San Francisco and found guilty. Sentence was deferred from December till February, pending certain appeals to the state Supreme Court. There is still an appeal left to the Federal Supreme Court.
