Prohibition diminishes Drunkenness.
(To the Editor). Sir, — Please extend your wonted indulgence while I lay before your readers one or two fact 3, not fancies. In the Olutha District for 4| years under license there were 179 convictions ; for 4£ years preceding Dec. 31st, I^9B, under no license 8, for drunkenness. A comparison of these three districts in 1 898 gives convictions for drunkenness as follows: — Eilesmere 14, Ashburton 60, Clutha 2 ; for disorderly offences and other offences. Eilesmere 47, Ashburton 51, Clutha 9; for sly grog-selling. Eilesmere 61, Ashburton 60, Clutha 8. These statistics explode the contention that prohibition creates sly grog selling. — I am etc., J. M.
