(per press association). Oullinsville, February 12. The Hon Mr Seddun left Havelock yesterday afternoon after visiting Wakamarina, and proceeded to Mahlkapawa. At both places he was received most enthusiastically, and was accorded at the latter spot a tremendous reception from the digger. He was received at both places by the supporters of the Ballance Government, and at Mahikapawa almost the whole population turned out to meet and greet him. Invekcargill, February 12. Josiah C. Jones, flour miller at Opnia, was accidentally shot yesterday. In the morning he left his house with a doublebarrelled gun and dogs, to shoot rabbits in a paddock about a mile from his residence. The dojjs returned without him, and on a search being made he wa3 found lying dead alongside a fence, with a gun shot wound in the temple. The gun was lying three feet away, one barrel being discharged. Circumstances point to his being shot while crossing the fance. Wellington, February 12. A seaman named David Davis, belonging to the steamer Dake of Sutherland, was drowned off the Railway wharf at midnight. Deceased and another seaman named Salve Arrowsmith were proceeding on board, but when the gangway was reached the former refused, saying he was going up town'for more drink. A struggle took place, resulting in both men going overboard. The accident was observed and a life-buoy thrown, which was caught by Arrowsmith, but Davis could not be found. The body was recorered this morning. Deceased was a native of Swansea, 32 years of age, and had no friends in the colony. A fire broke out this evening in the engine room of Waddell and M'Leod's aawmills, in the centre of the town. It got a good hold, but was suppressed before much damage was done. In the Supreme Court the Chief Justice quashed the conviction entered by the magistrate against John M'Dermott. During the strike M'Dermott was charged with assaulting a free laborer and was sentenced to two months' hard labor on each of three charges, the sentences to be cumulative. M'Darmott has served one sentence, and was on the other. Hia honor ruled that the verdict was against the weight of evidence.
