It is>nqt only th< Jews who are being ruthlessly, persecuted but the Protestants and Roman Catholics also. Russia hai gone back 40 years in a few months Persons of rank, of the liberal professions and of both sexes, are being ferociouslj flogged all over the country. At Warsaw, the other day, a Catholic priest, of ex emplary character, received sixty strokei with a birch-rod ; ; because he had en deavoured to hold. a service in the [open air, afterhis chnrch had been closed bj the police. The Emperor had abolishei all the privileges for the provincial council* trial by the jury is suspended for an indefinite period, and the schools and Uni versities are ruled as if they were barracks or prisons. The political reaction which has gone on since the Emperor fell into the hands of his present advisers (who are reckless as they are stupid and brutal) can only end either. in a revolution or in a military or palace cowp d'etat. Alexander is either a maniac (like most of his family) or else he is so saturated with apprehension for his own. personal safety or with religious fanaticism that he is practically insane.— Truth. .
