SS MAWHERA.

The s b Mawhera left her berth yesterday afternoon, and was brought alongside the gadget to take in coal. An odd Instance in connection with her launching which was not observed at the time is worth mention. It appears that by the power of suction four Ironbark logs became so glued to the bottom of the vessel that they clung to the flat bottom after she was launched ; and they were removed yesterday afternoon only by Captain Hill passing a rope around the vessel's bottom and putting a strain on. This broke the power of suction and the four logs were soon afloat. The Mawhera will take in about 300 tons of coal, and leave for Dunedin, where she will undergo a thorough overhaul before • resuming her old trade between Dunedin and Greymouth. Hill, master ; William Bannatyne, chief engineer ; and John Daniel, master shipwright ; of the s s Mawhera, respecting the repairs effected since stranding on 29th October last, and since launching on 12th insfc., which declaration was to the effect that the vessel is now in a seaworthy condition. Upon this the collector granted the vessel a clearance to proceed to Dunedin (without carrying passengers) for the purpose of being permanently repaired and re-registered, &c.
