Gisborne, November 18
A five-roomed house and bakery at Wareongaheka, occupied by a baker named Hayden, was burnt down to-day. The cause is unknown. : Hayden was uninsured, and the loss is £150. The buildings were owned by Black, and insured for £200 in the Colonial Office.
Mr Matthews has obtained a verdict against the Irish Times for £142. The cost? of the case are set down at £3000.
Some miners who went, some time ago, to the Lyell goldfield, Tasmania, have returned dissatisfied. The commissioner reports that gold is there, but the country is so rough that it is almost impossible to get supplies ; and this is the cause of the disappointment.
An exchange says:— We hear that Sala's ' ' Land of the Golden Fleece" articles are — in Moariland at least— not considered much better than "Eothen." and but little superior to the "Innocents Abroad." Just as people paid their money, sat out ore of Archibald Forbes lectures, and went homo blaspheming, so newspaper readers wade through an article by G A.S., and then enter on a course of hideous dissipation.— Sydney Bulletin,
