A deputation from the Freethought Conference waited on the Premier on Thursday last, suggesting certain amendments in the Printers and Newspapers' statute. The deputation claimed for Secularists the right to publish newspapers without being required to find sureties guaranteeing against the publication of blasphemous and other matters. Clarence Whistler, the American wrestler, who recently defeated Miller and Dinnie in the Grseco-Roman style, died on Friday last, the cause of death being a complication of diseases of the internal organs. He died with an unbeaten record as a Gneco-Roman wrestler. The performance of "Antigone" the last appearance of Miss Genevieve Ward, took place on Friday night, for the benefit of the Women's Hospital. Miss Ward was received with enthusiasm, and was presented with an illuminated address and a diamond star. The amount realised was £2680, j :■ A review of the local forces took place on' Monday at the Flemington racecourse, the proceedings terminating with a Bham fight. The affair was considered most successful, both with regard to the military manoeuvres and the interest taken by the public. Joseph Bland has been arrested by Detective Mahoney, of Melbourne, and Bain, of Dunedin, on a warrant, charging him with embezzling a sum of £590 from Stewart Dawson and Co., of Dunedin. Accused arrived here by the Te Anau, bringing with him a good-looking girl named Thompson. He was placed in the watchhouse, and £40 were found on him when arrested. The New South Wa'es Cricketing Association has definitely declined to join the Melbourne Cricket Club in sending a team Home next year, in consequence of the disqualification of certain members of the late Australian team. It is intended to make provision in the Victorian Public Works Department for the training of pupils in architecture and engineering.
