London, November 2. The sum of £5000 has been subscribed by the public for the defence of Mr Stead. A further sum of £1000 is required. It is asserted that a limited liability company is in existence, whose business consists in the exportation of girls to the Continent for immoral purposes. November 3. Mr Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gavette, against whom proceedings have been taken in connection with the alleged . abduction of the girl Lily Armstrong, has admitted that the statements made by Mrs Jarrett, who was called as a witness for the defence, and some astounding assertions, are not to be relied on . The German New Guinea Company has recommended the Government to defer for a year the scheme for colonisation of the German portion of New Guinea Rowell, the well-known pedestrian, has challenged Scott, of New Zealand, to meet him in a go-as-you-please contest. Rowell stipulates that, in consideration {of the match taking place in New Zealand, his expenses shall be paid.
The rumors of anti- German agitation at Manilla have been officially denied. Mr Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, contends that the passing of an Act by the Parliament of the South Australian Government for the protection of females, is the result of the publication of the Lily Armstrong story. November 8. The Colonial Wool and Finance Company of Australia has been registered with a capital of a quarter of a million. Russia is trying to incite a rebellion against Prince Alexander of Bulgaria. A conspiracy to murder King Milan of Servia has been discovered, and five arrests of those concerned in the plot have been made. The jury in the case of Stead, of the Pall Mali Gazette, who was found guilty of abduction in connection with the girl Lily Armstrong, wished to recommend the accused to mercy.
The Whites are expelling the Chinese from all Washington territory.
